Robert Clatworthy was born in Somerset and studied at the Chelsea School of Art [with Frink] and the Slade.
Hanover Gallery signed him up as soon as he left the Slade and exhibited his work in the 1950s and early 1960s alongside Francis Bacon, Picasso and Giacometti. He moved to Waddington Galleries in the 1960s.
His early sculpture, mainly animals, were modelled very quickly in wet plaster [which dries in a few minutes] resulting in his unique expressionistic style.
From 1960 onwards he concentrated mainly on Heads and Figures, which became more and more abstract.
The Tate Gallery collection includes 2 of his Bulls.
A book with a catalogue raisonne of the sculpture was published by Sansom in 2012.
He is, without doubt, one of my favourite artists.
